The primary objective of 1st Level French is to develop basic
communication skills emphasizing listening and speaking along
with grammatical structures. Natural language is utilized to
promote self-expression. Vocabulary and lessons focus on
high-interest, useful themes to maximize motivation and enhance
learning.

emphasis is on comprehension and production of frequently used
language. Students practice extensively in oral communication and
write simple messages, narratives and letters. Classroom
activities are related to the real world and include developing
an awareness of acceptable behavior in the foreign culture.

Students continue to develop cultural awareness and French
communication skills involving listening, speaking, reading and
writing. The emphasis is on comprehension and the production of
frequently used language. Students practice extensively in oral
communication and write messages that are more extensive,
letters, and narratives than the previous levels of French.
Classroom activities are related to the real world and include
developing awareness of acceptable behavior in foreign cultures.
AP FRENCH 4TH LEVEL

(Satisfies the Foreign Language Graduation Requirement)
Students at this level of language are moving from Stage 4 to
Stage 5, developing more cultural awareness and communication
skills involving reading, writing, listening, and speaking. The
emphasis is on comprehension and normal speech on general topics
and more complex literary selections with more in depth analysis
using literary and rhetorical devices. Grammar is revisited and
reviewed, polishing along the way. Students practice extensively
in oral communication practicing formal and informal exchanges on
concrete and abstract topics, using native-like discourse
strategies. They write poetry, daily journals, compositions, and
weekly 20 minute AP practice essays, and hone other AP practice
tests of Reading, Grammar (function words & verbs from 15
different tenses, adding speaking practice based on picture
series). Classroom activities are related to the real world
and
include developing an awareness of acceptable behavior in the
“francophone” cultures (French AP Course of study). Most
universities accept this course for college credit provided a
passing score on the National AP Examination (in May).

Students develop cultural awareness and communication skills

is on comprehension and production of frequently used language.
Students will meet the expectations of the communicative
functions within the context of familiar vocabulary and
structures. Phonological and grammatical errors are to be
expected and addressed in a way that promotes communication and
student confidence. Students practice extensively in oral and
written communication using the learned vocabulary and grammar.
Classroom activities are related to the real world and include
developing an awareness of acceptable behavior in the foreign
culture.

language. Students learn Hiragana, Katana phonetics and basic
Kanji characters. Classroom activities are related to the real

Students will communicate well in Japanese. Emphasis is on
listening, writing, and reading in Japanese. Japanese history,
culture and literature are studied extensively. The course is
conducted entirely in Japanese.

1st Level Latin introduces students to the basics but the
advantages are far reaching! The focus of the course is grammar,
vocabulary, and translations, but students subsequently build and
broaden their English vocabulary and skills as they work with
derivations and roots. Latin courses include study of Roman
civilization and mythology help broaden students’ background and
furnish historical insight.
LATIN 2ND LEVEL

This course completes the survey of Latin verbs, as well as a
vast majority of Latin grammar. Special emphasis is given to
subordinate clauses and periphrastic constructions. Literature
includes poems by Catullus, in addition to a continued
exploration of several Roman myths.

This course places an emphasis on writings by Cicero, Caesar,
Pompey, Eutropius, Augustus, Pliny and other historically
significant authors. The whole of Latin grammar is completed in
the first few weeks and emphasis is given to the changing
historiography about the fall of the Republic. Students explore a
greater understanding of literary style, use of rhetoric, and
other devices through Catullus’ and Ovid’s poems, Plautus’ plays,
and Caesar’s commentaries.
AP LATIN 4TH LEVEL

This course is designed to mirror the AP course in terms of
Caesar’s writings, while turning also to Plautus, Catullus, and
Ovid for exercise in Latin poetry and play-writing. In the second
half of the course, emphasis is placed on Livy, with further
exploration of Horatius, Cicero, and other significant neo-Latin
writers. Greater emphasis is given to how legend interacts with
historical record, how the author’s life may have influenced his
writings and the political implications of such writings.

Students build fluency and confidence in their new language
through oral and written practice. Teachers work to ensure

build up to story reading and retelling as the course progresses.
This course also includes Hispanic culture and civilization.

In this course, students continue to develop cultural awareness
and communication skills involving reading, writing, listening,
and speaking. Through the emphasis on comprehension and
production of normal speech on general topics, students will
compose expository passages about literary selections, such as
short stories, novels, poems and articles. Students will
demonstrate knowledge of grammatical detail and be able to
communicate extensively in formal and informal exchanges on
concrete and abstract topics. Students will prepare to pass the
AP Spanish language examination. Most universities accept this
course for college credit provided a passing score on the
National AP Examination (in May).
